When AI Can Do Almost Everything, What Does It Mean to Be Human?

AI is advancing at an unprecedented pace.

From writing, art, and research to science and medicine, its capabilities continue to expand. As robotics advances alongside AI, many tasks currently performed by humans may eventually be handled by machines.

Imagine a future where technology makes material abundance possible, and people no longer need to spend their days working simply to survive. How might we live?

If machines can do almost everything, where does that leave human value?

Perhaps this is an opportunity to rediscover who we are.

Beyond Ability and Achievement

For a long time, we have measured ourselves by our professions, abilities, and accomplishments, as though doing more and achieving more could make our lives more valuable.

Yet a newborn baby has accomplished nothing, and its life is infinitely precious.

A tree or a flower does not need to prove its usefulness to be worthy of our appreciation.

The value of life has never depended on achievement.

As AI gradually takes over more human tasks, we may begin to let go of these familiar measures of worth and ask ourselves:

Beyond all our abilities and achievements, who am I?

From Material Abundance to Self-Discovery

Technological progress offers the possibility of a more comfortable and abundant life.

With more freedom over our time, we could learn, create, explore the world, and enjoy life's simple pleasures.

Yet someone may possess a great deal and still feel that something is missing. Even great success does not always bring peace of mind.

Humanity has continually explored the world around us, accumulating knowledge and developing remarkable technologies.

Perhaps now is also a wonderful time to explore within.

We are accustomed to living through the thoughts of the mind, seeing ourselves and the world through memories, experiences, and beliefs. Sometimes, we become so absorbed in them that we lose sight of anything beyond them.

When we become quiet and turn inward, we may discover something surprising:

We are not the thoughts that continually come and go.

The mind is a tool, available whenever we need to think, analyze, learn, or create.

As wisdom naturally comes forth, the mind and technology become tools we can use freely, in service of life.

A Future of Wisdom and Abundance

Imagine a world where technology flourishes and humanity lives with wisdom.

We enjoy material abundance, along with inner peace and freedom.

Wisdom is love.

The innocence, goodness, and beauty inherent in life flow naturally.

Life can be simple, yet inwardly abundant.

The heart is still, yet embraces all things.

We can devote ourselves to work, create freely, or simply enjoy the sunlight, the breeze, and the beauty of trees and flowers.

Whether alone or in the company of others, we can delight in life with ease.

Perhaps the Garden of Eden that humanity has long dreamed of is not only a beautiful place of abundance, but also a state of being that has always been part of life.

As technological civilization continues to advance, we may also rediscover the innocence and wisdom that have been within us all along.
